"This Week in Central Montana" is a new segment that will be a weekly feature of Central Montana
Forum. We will take a look back on the published news about central Montana for the prior week and
will summarize it for your convenience. So instead of surfing every newspaper in the country looking
for news about central Montana, we will do the work for you every week!
This week's news was dominated by the annual "What the Hay" event in Hobson and Utica. This bale
decorating contest has become quite the display of wit and artistic creativity from those who have
taken up the challenge of using round hay bales as the primary component of their modern art.
This year's event will feature a very unique national "celebrity." The events take place on September
11th and September 12th.
In business news, it was announced that Allied Steel out of Lewistown landed a significant contract
for the new federal courthouse in Billings.
The News-Argus reported this week on a new dinosaur exhibit of a skull originally found in
Lewistown. It's an interesting piece that recounts the history of the artifact from the time it was first
discovered until now.
The debate over whether or not Lewistown should build a new junior high school continues to
generate letters to the News-Argus. This week's letters to the editor include this one.
The sporting scene in central Montana this week was, with one notable exceptin, quite painful.
Denton was that lone exception. They bounced back from their loss in the Six-Man championship last
season by thumping Ekalaka 52 to 18. The team that beat Denton to win last season's Six-Man
championship, Winifred-Roy, dropped their first game of the new season by 18. The football scores
for local teams included:
Lewistown 0
Laurel 35
Power-Dutton-Brady 44
Hobson-Moore-Judith Gap 8
Denton 52
Ekalaka 18
Stanford-Geyser 14
Savage 63
Reed Point-Rapelje 52
Winifred-Roy 34
