"This Week in Central Montana" is a new segment that will be a weekly feature of Central Montana
Forum. We will take a look back on the published news about central Montana for the prior week and
will summarize it for your convenience. So instead of surfing every newspaper in the country looking
for news about central Montana, we will do the work for you every week!

For the second week in a row, the story that's getting the most attention in the press is the debate
leading up to the election to decide whether a new middle school will be built in Lewistown on the site
of the current high school (which people still refer to as the "new high school," even though it was
built over twenty years ago).  With the ballots due in the mail by September 21st, everyone is
making their final push to get their point of view heard.

The Great Falls Tribune examines the
potential of this election as a bellwether for the November
elections, with the voter attitudes on hot button phrases like "stimulus" being potential pitfalls for
any new infrastructure investment/spending. Meanwhile, the Lewistown News-Argus published a final
flurry of letters
here, here, here, and here. Additional information is available from the
pro-new-school Lewistown
Responsible Taxpayers website. The Lewistown school district also
provides detailed information on the proposal
here.

A very sad story resulted from an
accident involving a car the football bus from Highwood. One
woman lost her life.

The Tribune featured a travel piece about
floating the Missouri River north of Winifred. Local
businesses
Hole-in-the-Wall Adventures and Dog Creek Outfitters are talked up as a couple
extraordinary local options for a great outdoor experience.

The big event in Lewistown this last weekend was the Chokecherry Festival. Preview articles
here and
here highlight the events that have since been completed.

In a story that impact everyone in central Montana (everyone who uses electricity, anyway), the final
hurdles have been cleared for the building of the
new natural gas power plant outside of Great Falls.
This should be good news in terms of creating additional demand for local natural gas exploration as
well as for providing another reliable source of local electricity.

An article caught my eye about an upcoming BLM meeting regarding the Antiquities Act that is sure
to be of local interest, but the article turned out to be only a teaser. This is interesting in its own
right as it points toward the direction the Tribune and many other newspapers are taking in their
efforts to drive revenue in the internet age. As more people move away from buying newspapers and
start to rely exclusively on online news, newspapers are looking for creative ways to drive revenue.
This article is one example of newspapers trying to navigate this emerging market.
